Fabric Painting

"Computers are useless. They can only give you answers". - Pablo Picasso

Fabric painting is done by using proprietary colours, most of them are acrylic based and water soluble on application. They work best on natural fabrics like cotton, silk etc.. thin coats can also be applied. Painting can be done on dresses, bedcovers, pillow cases, curtains and other articles.

The basic course of ten classes will help the student to get acquainted with:

  • The medium and the materials;
  • the colour theory and the uses of the colour wheel;
  • tonal values and importance of arial and linear perspectives in painting;
  • mixing of different colours and addition of thinners and mediums;
  • cleaning of brushes and their maintenance;
  • how to paint.

A simple project will be done on fabric by the student as a start.

Fabric colours must be fixed by using a hot iron after a couple of days of drying, this will ensure longer life for the painting, especially those done on dresses. A frame should be used to stretch the fabric and the cloth allowed to dry thorouhghly before removal.

Floral patterns are usually done on cotton cloth by the student, though regular painting of landscapes etc. can also be tried, the picture above shows fabric paints used thickly on drapery
